9. Made from the Lowest, To Reflect the very Highest. “…For dust you are, and to dust, you shall return.) Genesis 3:19 ” When Adam sinned, God came down to investigate the calamity that had occurred. He spoke first to Adam, He asked him what happened, then He spoke to Eve, asked her a question, then He simply addressed the serpent. And in verse 17 of Genesis 3, as God now gives out punishments (He gave the woman hers in verse 16), speaking to Adam, God said “Genesis 3:17-19 “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.” Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” It is interesting that God looks at the living person Adam, and calls him dust. Adam was as much dust after he sinned as he was just before he sinned. In His sinless state, he was still dust. That's what he was made from according to Genesis 2:7: “and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathe into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul”. God told Adam you are dust, but now you are dust disconnected from me because of sin and a savior will be necessary for that connection to be re-established. Adam was dust before he sinned. Adam was dust after he sinned. You and I are dust now! What am I trying to say? God breathed His life into dust and gave meaning to dust, He did not change the composition of dust, He gave meaning to dust. Adam before God breathed the life into Him was just beautifully formed dust. He spoke life into Adam and Adam became a living being. Although the highlight of creation was the creation of humanity, you and I should remember as we observe the seventh-day Sabbath that we are nothing without God. We may think we are something in a worldly context but my dear friend, without God we are nothing! if you and I have any meaning, if you and I have any value, it is that God places the value in us. Of ourselves, we are only dust, and nobody fights a war over dust. Dust is just dust! – what people walks on. It is even lower than the dirt itself, we use the dirt to plant. No one gathers dust to plant. Without God we are nothing but with God we are elevated to the level that we can reflect the very character of God. Your value and mine and Adam’s, was the fact that God spoke life into him and God put into him the capacity to reflect the very character of God, divinity flashing through dust. My brothers and sisters, you and I through Adam were made from the very lowest element dust, that the miracle might be this–– that we might reflect the very character of God. Made from the lowest, to reflect the very highest. who can measure that gap between the two extremes, the lowest and the highest? No one can, but God. As you you keep the Sabbath holy, remember that whatever meaning you and I have, whatever value you and I have, it is not natural to us, it is a value God has placed in us by putting in us His life and the capacity to reflect His character. As you keep the Sabbath holy, remember that God desires to elevate us from dust to the level we will reflect His very image. May God bless you as you remain conscious of your natural state and also conscious of the height to which God has called you. May the Lord bless you, as you keep the Sabbath holy.
