EDWARD: First off, for those of you obsessed with the well-being of Ichabod, she is fine. More than fine. Living in the lap of luxury, were luxury my name. And, since this is TheRiddlerSpeaks and not Jonathan'sBirdSpeaks, I am pleased to inform you that she is currently asleep and thus unable to entertain the masses, leaving me, your eponymous hero, here to enliven and enlighten as usual. (Ikky squawks) Shush. You're asleep. She talks in her sleep, you see. Now. Where were we? Riddleress asked: What is it that you can keep after giving it to someone else? Ahh, a provocation. As opening gambits go, the only pawn sacrificed here may be you. I know the answer you seek, but let's not be boring. It's been a dull day - let's have a little fun and prevaricate, instead. Shall I compile you a list, my dear? Ahem. Metaphorically, your heart; or your soul, if you believe in such intangible things. Love. Joy. Your name. Your genes. A promise. A secret. Influenza. The common cold. Herpes, syphilis... indeed any contagious or venereal disease you care to name. (chuckles) I know that's not what you intended - but I take my amusements where I can find them. This riddle is vapid, not titillating; there are too many possible solutions. One could argue that that is the point, leading more people to get it wrong. No, no - that is insufficient. It would be far too easy to switch your 'correct' answer if somebody you don't like guesses it. Further, an inordinate amount of plausible responses apply, so if someone guessed an answer that you had not previously considered that fits the criteria, what sustainable argument do you have against it? If this were one of mine, I would at least have altered that pesky auxiliary verb of 'can' into another, better auxiliary verb like 'should' to wittle down that list of responses. But this is clearly not one of mine. In future, Riddleress, how about you save those cliched little riddles of yours for someone other than the Riddler, hmm? The breadth of my indulgence for the time-wasting inanities of others stretches but a short distance and snaps back like you would not believe - and on that, you have... my word.
