suspicious music Me- Imagine you walk into a classroom where everyone is the same gender as you, including the teacher. Which leads to the question, does it create a better learning experience or does it limit it? suspicious music HELLOOO guys, Im camila and welcome to another episode of “The Talk” where we talk about it all. Today we will discusssssss drumroll the debateMini-doc Script of single sex versus co-ed schools and uncover the pros and cons of each. I feel that to this day it is an important topic because parents only truly want whats better for their kids. I mean totally understandable because if I was parent thats certainly what I would want. Not only that but in this world, academic success is a major accomplishment. Thesis Leading me to mention that, single sex schools have become a relevant conversation because researchers believe that those who attend single sex schools can focus more completely and encounter less stereotypical views, while other researchers argue that co-ed schools prove more effective because their students tend to become more accepting toward others and they have a positive orientation. Background I dont know if yall remember when earlier I had mentioned how academic success represents a major accomplishment, welllll many people hope to achieve it, meaning there are various organizations that are willing to help. For example, Public and private schools. If you didn't know, the international school of denver states that private schools are not run by the government but instead by an organization which is why they require tuition (money sound effect). Or money in simple terms. *suspicious sound effect* Wait wait wait. Have yall ever heard the phrase “ you get what you pay for “. suspicious sound effect Does this mean that private is better? Looks like we just found our next talk. Anyways as I was sayingggg, if a public school isnt run by the government then that just means that a public school is which is why it is free of charge. According to a U.S. News article by Heidy Borst, * waltz music*up until the 1960s and 70s, it was very common to separate boys and girls. As for today some single sex schools have even converted to being co ed. Yes thats right. An example of a single sex school converting to co-ed would be Canbrook, located in Sydney, Australia as stated in The Educator Australia website. In which it might or might not suggest that single sex may be a thing of the past but the question still remains. suspicious sound effect Do kids perform better in a single or co-ed environment? Let me say no more and get to the point, shall i. Side 1 As you guys know the biggest threat that can cause young students to become distracted is their opposite sex peers. According to Ms.Harrold, a teacher at Alvin Highscchol, some students use class time to freshen up their makeup and their appearance overall. And of course, if students keep doing so it might have the potential to bring students' grades down. Many do feel that by removing the opposite gender, it can help their kids improve their academic grades. Surprisingly, they were right. NASSPE performed a study that included teachers with the same training and the same class size and to our surprise, both girls and boys in single sex school scored higher than those in co ed. I know this seems crazy but what is crazier is the percentage of those students. Boys are always seen as more playful and loud than girls, but when they are united with their own gender, they seem to do academically better. Boys in co-ed scored 37% while boys in single sex score up to 87%. WOW just WOW. Just seeing this I would’ve put my kids in single sex right away. I mean not that I have any but these results are just unbelievable. Even girls performed amazingly. The girls in co-ed started pretty strong with a 59% but the girls in single sex scored 79%. Anywaysssss not only that but same sex schools argue that they remove stereotypes. And as a woman I can say that we are seen as less capable than men. The social roles for women have always included nurses, teachers, secretaries, caregivers, etc. but what about those females that want to pursue math and other subjects but don’t want to limit their identity as a female? I mean realistically speaking if i was surrounded by all girls, I would feel no judgement to pursue whatever I want. Coming from Celima Ribeiros article, a student named Madhumitha shares a close experience as a student who moved to a single sex school, coming from a co-ed. Madhumitha says she felt more secure and validated as she pursued math and other subjects in her all girls school rather than her coed school. Being a girl and having a liking towards math and science shouldnt mean you are any less of a woman. Stereotypes are hard but having several people there that support you sure do make it a lot easier to overcome. Side 2 Now dont get me wrong tho, single sex does have its pros but so does coed. Like I was saying earlier, co-ed is a great way to get your kids ready for the real world by learning communication at such an early age. These young kids are exposed to all different types of people. Including those children with special needs. They engage with all sorts of kids, making them open minded, and as they grow so does their interacting skills, as Martin states in his blog. Since they are around all sorts of children, including the opposite gender, some of the girls end up with a higher resilience which for girls, is an excellent thing to have. Boys can be ruthless sometimes but over time these young girls learn to not be so vulnerable. A study conducted by Poonam Vats shows that girls in single sex schools get little to no support, causing them to be considered vulnerable. As a person, I know that things in life will happen, life will throw you a ball and you need to be able to swerve it. You can’t just hide and expect it to go away, you have to overcome it. My perspective The way I see things is that by enrolling your children in single sex youu are entirely removing an entire gender. For children social interaction is very important. I like to put it in this way, if a child is learning English for the first time and has an environment where everyone speaks English it is obvious the kid is going to master English as were at with spanish or any other language. If a child is around someone who colors, paints and dresses sparkly it’s obvious how it’s going to shape your kids interests and likings. If they hang around humans who run, build blocks, and tumble, then they are most likely to be awarded a different set of skills. It just seems obvious that the more diverse your social environment, the more diverse your social skills will be. If we’re talking about segregating children for school purposes for the whole 12 to 13 years of education, it might damage their future interactions with other humans in the big wide world. I mean sure I get you want to remove the opposite sex gender for your children so they do academically better but in the real world, you can’t remove those opposite genders. When they get out in the workplace they are going to be expected to be comfortable working alongside their opposite gender, but by that time they won’t know how. Those children will slowly lose the experience to communicate with the opposite gender. Call To Action To wrap this talk up I would say the key is to ensure that the education meets their individual needs and whatever helps them succeed because after all everyone learns differently. Anywaysssss thats all for today. Hope you guys enjoyed this talk and remember to subscribe to stay tuned in for more. Camila out. disconnected audio sound effect
