It’s now again! Welcome back to It’s Now Again, the podcast where we explore mindfulness practices from a secular, evidence-based perspective. I’m your host, Jeremy West, and today we’re diving into a topic that touches the very core of our being—using mindfulness to discover your true self. We all carry with us layers of identity—roles we play, labels we wear, and stories we tell ourselves about who we are. But beneath these layers lies your authentic self, the essence of who you truly are. Mindfulness offers us a way to peel back these layers and connect with that true self, leading to greater self-awareness, inner peace, and a deeper sense of fulfillment. In today’s episode, we’ll explore how mindfulness can guide you on this journey of self-discovery. As we go through life, we naturally take on various roles and identities. We might see ourselves as a parent, a professional, a friend, or a partner. We might also identify with our accomplishments, our challenges, or even the opinions of others. These roles and identities are a normal part of life, but sometimes, they can become so deeply ingrained that we lose sight of who we truly are beneath it all. Mindfulness invites us to step back and observe these roles and identities with curiosity and non-attachment. It helps us recognize that while these aspects of ourselves are important, they do not define our true essence. By bringing mindful awareness to our thoughts, emotions, and experiences, we can begin to peel back the layers of identity and get in touch with the authentic self that lies beneath. One of the key practices in using mindfulness for self-discovery is self-reflection. Mindfulness encourages us to look inward, to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment, and to ask ourselves deeper questions about who we are and what truly matters to us. This process of self-reflection helps us gain clarity about our true values, desires, and purpose, allowing us to live more authentically. To better understand this concept, think of your true self as a clear blue sky, and the roles, labels, and stories you carry as clouds passing through the sky. The clouds may obscure the sky at times, but the sky itself is always there—unchanged, steady, and vast. Mindfulness helps us see beyond the clouds, reconnecting with the clear sky of our true self. One of the challenges in discovering our true self is that it can be difficult to let go of the identities and stories we’ve held onto for so long. We might fear that without these labels, we won’t know who we are, or we might worry about how others will perceive us. But mindfulness teaches us that our true self is not something we need to create or find—it’s already within us. It’s simply a matter of peeling back the layers that have built up over time and allowing our authentic essence to shine through. To illustrate the process of discovering your true self through mindfulness, I want to share a story called “The Sculptor and the Marble.” There was once a great sculptor who was known for creating the most lifelike and beautiful statues. One day, a young artist asked the sculptor how he was able to create such masterpieces. The sculptor smiled and replied, “I don’t create the statue. The statue is already there, hidden within the marble. My job is simply to chip away at the excess stone, revealing the statue that has always been there.” This story reminds us that our true self is like the statue within the marble—it’s already there, waiting to be revealed. Mindfulness helps us chip away at the excess layers of identity, uncovering the authentic self that has always been within us. Now that we’ve explored the concept of discovering your true self through mindfulness, let’s talk about some practical techniques you can use to begin this journey of self-discovery. 1. Practice Self-Reflection Meditation: Set aside some quiet time each day for self-reflection meditation. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Begin by asking yourself a simple question, such as “Who am I beneath the roles I play?” or “What truly matters to me?” As you sit with these questions, observe the thoughts and feelings that arise without judgment. Allow yourself to explore these questions with curiosity and openness, letting go of any need to find immediate answers. 2. Observe Your Thoughts and Labels: Throughout your day, practice observing the thoughts and labels you attach to yourself. Notice when you find yourself identifying with a particular role or story, such as “I’m not good enough” or “I’m always the responsible one.” When these thoughts arise, gently remind yourself that these are just clouds passing through the sky—they do not define who you are. This practice helps you detach from limiting identities and reconnect with your true self. 3. Journal Your Discoveries: Keep a journal to document your journey of self-discovery. After your self-reflection meditation, take a few minutes to write down any insights or realizations you had during your practice. You might also write about the roles and identities you’ve observed throughout the day, and how you’re working to peel back those layers. Journaling helps you deepen your self-awareness and track your progress over time. 4. Practice Mindful Self-Compassion: As you explore your true self, it’s important to approach this journey with self-compassion. You may uncover aspects of yourself that you’ve been avoiding or that challenge your current self-concept. When this happens, practice offering yourself kindness and understanding. You might say to yourself, “It’s okay to feel uncertain as I explore my true self,” or “I’m worthy of love and acceptance just as I am.” This practice of self-compassion supports you in embracing your true self without fear or judgment. 5. Set an Intention for Authentic Living: Set a daily intention to live authentically, guided by your true self. You might frame this intention as a question: “How many more ways can I continue to live in alignment with my true self even more?” This intention will help you stay connected to your authentic essence as you navigate your day, making choices that reflect your true values and desires. Mindfulness teaches us that our true self is already within us, waiting to be uncovered. By peeling back the layers of identity and reconnecting with our authentic essence, we can live more fully, with greater self-awareness, inner peace, and fulfillment. That’s it for today’s episode.
